Whatcom County (Washington) Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC) has focused on helping those in need through churches, church volunteers and referrals to agencies since 1989. We are a 501(c) 3 non-profit entity owned, supported and governed by 35 local churches of different denominations and an affiliate of a national organization that began in 1977.

The church doorstep is a frequent destination for people in need. But most churches alone cannot fully meet the needs of every homeless family, single parent, elderly shut-in, or those living in poverty. Love INC enables churches in our community to pool their resources and services so that those in need are not turned away. Love INC allows church volunteers to be the hands and feet of Jesus and the bearer of God’s love in situations where the need for that love is great. It takes churches working together across denominational lines to meet these multifaceted and complex needs. Churches and church volunteers model unity of the Body of Christ as they work together to use their unique gifts and talents to serve others.

Existing resources operating independently are not adequate to meet current and growing levels of need. Community agencies refer people in need to Love INC to fill gaps in services and also receive referrals from Love INC of verified needs that are appropriate to the agency’s service. Therefore, people in need receive coordinated help through a network of church and community services and resources. Love INC is not just about meeting needs though. It’s about building relationships that have the potential to transform lives.

  • Love INC does not enable people to stay in their current situation, but offers them ways to improve with some assistance.

God’s two greatest commandments (to love God and to love one another) are exactly what Love INC stands for and is doing. After all, God wants us to value and to help the poor and the needy. Just how valuable such people are is found in the parable of the judgment in Matthew 25. Jesus stated that when the hungry are given food, the thirsty drink, the stranger welcomed, the naked clothed, and sick cared for and the prisoner visited, that doing such from them was doing the same for Him. Imagine the difference churches can make by joining with other churches in their community to help those in need. When the Body of Christ works together, the results can be miraculous.
